Introducing our Dynamic Sports Instructor ~ Tom

Yikes is privileged to have the burgeoning expertise of Tom Dasler on board in the holiday programme everyday. 21 year old Tom also takes sports/fitness sessions in our after school programme.

Tom is currently studying at the Nelson Marlbrough Institute of Technology doing the Diploma in Applied fitness Course.

"I have a strong interest in sports and fitness and always enjoy being in the outdoors  and being active and encouraging others to get involved. I played many sports through my schooling years and growing up, and am now focusing on playing competitive golf for  Nelson and Tasman."

It has been well documented with the advance of technology, and both parents working, many basic sports skills and ball skills we took for granted, elude this generation. We are rapt to help nurture and develop these skills at Yikes and Tom is awesome how he provides these skills but also engages with the children.
Here are some shots of Tom helping a bunch of 5-7 year old boys with football.

We look forward to seeing Tom's golf career flourish and appreciate his dedication to the children at Yikes.
Please note: all these photos of Tom in action were taken by Sarah 7 years old.

Highlights from Basic Engineering Techniques with Kim Brice

It started with an egg and materials found round the home Would their egg survive dropping from a height and land without cracking? There would be some prospective engineers I would climb into any aircraft they built, but some I am afraid I would think twice about, after seeing some splatter lol. Kim 's workshops never ceased to amaze me how all the children were engaged and on task. That is a great skill.  Engineers need to test their design Did the egg land safely ??? Yikes was privileged to host three workshops tutored by Kim Brice. The kids were engaged and learnt valuable skills and were able to enjoy the journey of design and engineering. Kim is a local designer and business owner ~ click here to learn more about Kim and his business.

Cycle Adventures in the mix....

Spooners Tunnel on the agenda - headlamps and bikes! Nelson has so many incredible cycle trails and bike tracks to explore. We want to give the children at Yikes a taste of this adventure but also help them develop practical skills around this. Thomas Smith our French connection is passionate about cycling and will impart his knowledge and passion to the kids. Thomas will conduct workshops in the holidays covering bike maintainence and obstacle/slalem courses and then in the afternoon the kids will head out to ride some trails.
